What a dosing funnel actually does

A standard portafilter basket is narrow at the top. Grounds from a grinder chute or a dosing cup often miss the rim and pile up on the counter, and the lost dose is never uniform. A dosing funnel widens that mouth so the chute lines up with the basket, the coffee goes in instead of beside it, and the dose you weighed is the dose that lands. It also lets you work in place – distribute, then tamp – without lifting the collar off between steps.

Magnetic vs friction-fit – why the magnets matter

A friction-fit funnel is held by a tight clip or a silicone lip. It holds while you are gentle, then lifts or spins the moment you start the WDT or lean into the tamp, so you end up holding it with one hand. A magnetic funnel seats a ring of magnets against the steel portafilter rim and stays through the whole puck-prep routine.

The detail buyers should actually ask about is magnet strength. Too weak and the collar slips during WDT; too strong and it is awkward to pull off after tamping. A dosing cup is a standalone vessel you grind into and then pour from into the basket; it separates grinding from dosing. A funnel sits on the portafilter the whole time, so you grind straight in, distribute and tamp with no transfer step and no second vessel to rinse. For single-dose and WDT workflows the funnel is faster and loses less coffee; for weighing the dose before grinding, the cup still has a place. They are not either/or – many bars keep both.

Match the collar to the basket, not the machine name. 58 mm is the E61-group standard – La Marzocco, Rocket, ECM and most prosumer Italians – and the most common wholesale request. 54 mm is the Breville domestic size. 51 mm suits older Gaggia and La Pavoni levers. Material and finish

The body is aluminum alloy – light, non-reactive and cheaper to machine than steel for a passive collar that never touches heat. Finishes run mirror, matt, frosting or painting; matt and painting are the retail favourites, mirror reads “pro”. The logo goes on by laser marking or silkscreen and the colour is matched to any Pantone you name, which is what lets a private-label programme look like a brand rather than a catalogue part.
